The best way for us to teach our kids how to manage life with digital technology, is to first teach them how to manage life without it.

“As the Teacher Librarian at a large middle school for the past 10 years, I have seen firsthand how Chromebooks and smartphones have increasingly replaced pen, paper and physical books, and that the price has been paid in lower attention spans, decreased interest in reading, and less socialization among students. Kathleen Barlow's passion is contagious and her work to help families realize the importance of screen-light living is inspiring!”
HILLARY HALL, School Librarian
“Kathleen Barlow came to our school to let our kids and parents know all about genuine systematic evidence of negative impacts of too much screen on the brains of children. Just saying “systematic evidence” is enough to make teachers and administrators think that the students would lose interest long before the adults would. However, Kathleen kept the children and the adults following along with excellent anecdotes, well-prepared presentation materials, and plenty of interaction with the students. The children responded well to her warm demeanor and the parents/teachers felt that the child-focused presentation still provided the kind of information they needed to make informed decisions about screens in their children's lives. As a school administrator, I have received much less resistance from our students regarding why we do not have personal screens or assigned screen time in our school. The presentation was that effective.”
